Why we chose pine pellets
Pine pellets are simple, affordable, and easy for us to keep stocked. The product we use is made from natural pine and is labeled without added chemicals or perfumes. The pellets absorb moisture and gradually break down into sawdust, while the pine helps control everyday litter-box odor.
We also prefer a straightforward material around very young kittens. Litter is not food, and a kitten that repeatedly eats any litter should be discussed with a veterinarian, but we are comfortable raising our kittens with these unscented wood pellets.
How often we clean it
We remove solid waste as often as possible—normally in the morning and evening, with an additional daytime cleaning when our schedule allows. Because we have several cats and kittens, we usually replace the litter completely once or twice a week.
A home with one kitten may be able to replace it about once a week, and sometimes less often. The real guide is the condition of the box: replace the pellets whenever they become damp, heavily broken down, soiled, or begin to smell. Wash and dry the box before adding fresh pellets.
What we like
- Natural pine with no added perfume in the product we use
- Good everyday odor control
- Far less expensive than many cat litters
- Easy to buy in a large 40 lb bag
- A familiar litter for our kittens before they leave our home
The honest downside
As wet pellets break down, some sawdust can be carried outside the box on paws. In our experience it is manageable rather than excessive, and a large litter-catching mat helps. The texture is also different from fine-grain litter, so an older cat that has never used pellets may need a gradual transition.
